King Ludwig's Castle Herrenchiemsee

Ludwig II of Bavaria, a fervent admirer of the Sun King, built this «Versailles» between 1878 and 1886. The resemblance between the original and the copy is striking, even down to the garden arrangement. The state bedroom and the Hall of Mirrors are truly magnificent. The palace park designed by Carl von Effner also features motifs from Versailles. One part of the Castle houses a King Ludwig II-Museum. The story of Ludwig II’s life and early death is documented with paintings, busts and historic photographs, as well as memorabilia such as his christening gown and coronation robe. Furnishings from the king’s former apartment and the winter garden at the Munich Residence and plans for Neuschwanstein, Linderhof and Herrenchiemsee are also on display, and there is a large exhibition of craft objects created for Ludwig II.
